Among more than 1,500 students and delegates from across India, thirteen students representing BCM Schools took part in the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) International Convention 2026. Held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur from May 25 to 31, the students were accompanied by teachers Ms. Charanjeet Kaur, Ms. Shipra Goel, and Ms. Nishu. Founded in 1977 by Dr. Kiran Seth, SPIC MACAY is a voluntary youth movement dedicated to preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage among young people through classical arts, yoga, meditation, traditional knowledge systems, and community service. For many students, the week began with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. A routine of 4 a.m. yoga, satvik meals, digital detox, shramdaan, heritage walks, and immersive workshops on Gurubani, Kathakali, and Sattriya challenged them to step beyond their comfort zones. What initially seemed difficult soon became deeply rewarding. Away from mobile phones and everyday distractions, students discovered the joy of simple living, built lasting friendships, learned to manage themselves independently, and developed a deeper appreciation for India’s cultural roots. Teachers witnessed a noticeable transformation as the days progressed. Curiosity replaced hesitation, confidence grew, and students embraced every opportunity to learn, serve, and connect. Director of Education, BCM Schools, Mr. Amitava Ghosh, appreciated the students’ adaptability and commitment, noting that at a time when families are increasingly concerned about excessive screen exposure, such immersive experiences help young minds reconnect with themselves, their peers, nature, and their cultural heritage. The students returned not only with memories of a unique cultural journey but also with greater self-discipline, resilience, and mindfulness. The experience beautifully reflected BCM Schools’ vision of holistic education—shaping character, values, and life skills alongside academic growth.

The recital was presented by Dr. Harvinder Sharma, SNA Awardee and renowned sitar exponent, accompanied by Mr. Surjeet Singh on Tabla. The performance mesmerized the students and offered them a rich exposure to the depth, discipline, and spiritual essence of Indian classical music. Mr. D.P. Guleria, Principal, BCM School Chandigarh Road encouraged students to engage with Indian classical art forms, emphasising their role in nurturing creativity, focus, and cultural values. Mr. Amitava Ghosh, Director School Education, BCM Foundation graced the occasion and felicitated the artists for their outstanding contribution to Indian classical music. He highlighted the importance of integrating cultural education with academics for balanced student development. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and staff, making it a memorable and enriching cultural experience.
At the heart of IIT Madras, the SPIC MACAY 9th International Convention blossomed into a cultural pilgrimage from May 20 to 26, 2024. Five students, mentored by Ms. Kamaljeet Kaur, delved into India’s heritage, with Mahabalipuram’s ancient beauty marking a pivotal moment in their cultural awakening.
